TP-Link MC220L — Gigabit Fiber-to-Ethernet Media Converter

The TP-Link MC220L is a Gigabit media converter that bridges between fiber (SFP) and copper (RJ-45) networks. It supports up to 1000 Mbps data rates on both ports, hot-swappable SFP module, full-/half-duplex auto-negotiation, and auto-MDI/MDIX. Perfect for extending network links over fiber for long distances while retaining copper connectivity for devices locally.

Description

The TP-Link MC220L is designed for network backbone expansion: converting between 1000BASE-SX/LX fiber and 1000BASE-T copper (RJ-45) media. It complies with IEEE 802.3ab (Gigabit copper), IEEE 802.3z (1000BASE-X), and flow control via IEEE 802.3x. When paired with the appropriate SFP module, it can operate over multi-mode or single-mode fiber, enabling reach up to ~0.55 km (multi-mode) or ~10 km (single-mode), depending on fiber and module used.

The RJ-45 port supports auto-MDI/MDIX and auto-negotiation of speed and duplex, minimizing setup work. The SFP port is hot-swappable, so modules can be swapped without powering down the device. LEDs on the front provide status on power and link/activity. It can work standalone or slide into TP-Link’s TL-MC1400 chassis for neat integration.

Physically, the MC220L is compact and very low-power. It runs off an external power adapter, consuming only about 1.7 W. Typical operating environment is 0-40 °C, with storage temps down to -40 °C. Humidity tolerances are standard (non-condensing).

Application

  • Fiber extension between buildings or across large distances where copper isn’t viable

  • Connecting remote surveillance systems via fiber, then converting to copper-based cameras or switches

  • Bridging fiber to copper for switches, access points, or devices without SFP

  • Use in existing network infrastructure expansion or retrofits
